Post 151: Life in Winter Harbour, BC

Life in Winter Harbour, BC at The OutPost

Living and working  in Winter Harbour, BC is quite interesting and unique. Life here at The OutPost,  is different from what we knew before.

There are only a small handful of full time residents, along with people who come to work here during the summer.  Then you have the Tourist who come in for varying lengths of time to FISH, FISH FISH!

Several charter fishing boats docked at our wharf.
A “sporty” Fisherman getting ready to clean his catch.
Commercial fishing boats at low tide
Our friendly Heron visiting
A playful sea otter,

These Tourist come via boat, car, truck camper and even a motor home. They come in all sizes and shapes, male, female and children lol. The main point they have in common is THEY ALL LOVE TO FISH!

A guide put his foot beside a fish to show how REALLY BIG the fish was.

Coming in by vehicle?

The OutPost (where Bill and Joy work) also offers various camping locations. Waterside, Waterview, Campground, trailer, AFrame.

Camping Waterside at The OutPost

Camping by the Waterside, right at the water’s edge. There are only 2 spots in this location. Both have water and electricity. You are steps away from the water so you are able to watch the playful sea otters floating by.

Occassionally seals  come in close too. Across the bay you will be able to view a Mother black bear with 2 or 3 cubs when the tide is down. They come in looking for food 🙂 on almost a daily basis.

While watching the tide roll in and out which always brings to Joy’s mind the song lol

These sites are a few mins walk to hot showers, and washer and dryers located down on the wharf.

Our Waterview camping sites

Our Waterview camping sites are also referred to as the Penthouse lol. Higher up the hill, beside The OutPost general store are 2 or 3 campsites. These sites have an incredible view of the harbour.

Each site has power, water and sewer hook-ups located on gravel and grass lots. They are quite in demand and often are booked way in advance.

Our treed campground sites

We have a nice campground overlooking Winter Harbour with 20 fully serviced RV / tent sites available. Each site has power, water and sewer hook-ups. There are showers and bathroom facilities on site as well as some limited freezer space.

Camping Cabin

We have a Camping Cabin available for nightly rentals.  This A-Frame cabin is located at the campground, and includes a kitchenette with cooking burners, small fridge, and sink.  Twin bunks and a loft with queen bed, plus a small dinette.  (please note the loft requires climbing a ladder) There is a small porch with barbecue and picnic table too.  Washrooms and showers are available at the campground wash-house facilities.  Freezer space is available.

This is an amazing little community, that is willing to help each other out and runs along very smoothly. There is still so much to  chat about but we will leave that for our next blog 🙂
