Post 73: Haystack Mountain OHV Area, New Mexico

Haystack Mountain OHV Area, New Mexico

Nov 13th – 20th     2017

We finally entered a new state on Nov 13th. Texas was just huge :). Haystack Mountain OHV Area, New Mexico was our new home for a while.  We found this  campsite on Campendium. This gorgeous area has only 4 campsites. Two of the sites are handicap accessible ones. The handicap sites have paved walkways to the vault washroom.  The main purpose of Haystack Mountain OHV Area is for Off Highway Vehicles  and awesome hiking trails.

Another view of our camping area

The site we chose was #2, a corner lot with a panoramic view that you can see forever from. The view just blows us away every time we sit in our lawn chairs and stare at the horizon. We are perched atop a crest or mountain if you like, and below us is a monstrous valley with hills, gullys, OHV trails and hiking trails. Bill has enjoyed a few of the hiking trails with the dogs already. Joy just loves to sit and enjoy  the breathtaking view.

The one thought that keeps going through Joy’s mind is “How far can we actually see in the distance?” It has to be miles and miles to the mountains in the distance.

This area was so wide open, with greenery and rocks all around us. Quiet with plenty of wildlife to watch. Bunnies and birds drove our puppy nuts, she just wanted to run and play with the bunnies. We really love New Mexico.

Each Site

Each site is light gravel and dirt with a covered structure on a cement pad. A really nice metal picnic table is chained to the cement pad in the middle. We have our own metal fire pit with a grill that will flip on or off the fire pit for barbecuing and a large metal garbage can.

We did have to clean up the site a little when we arrived due to the garbage can being overflowing. This could have been due to the wind or a huge black bird  helping themselves to the goodies in the can.

Since we have been here, Joy has seen someone come and empty the cans once and clean up the vault washroom which we took a peek into. It was actually very nice and quite clean.

Internet reception

The write ups we read on this location said that internet was really good, most likely due to the 3 or 4 towers on the property. Unfortunately, T-Mobile is not one of the suppliers on those poles. So our internet is hit and miss at the best.

The city of Roswell

The city of Roswell, New Mexico is a very easy drive of  15 mins away. They have EVERYTHING that you could possibly want. Restaurants, name brand stores, repair shops for vehicles, parts stores for vehicles. The only thing they did not have that we really needed was a new signal power booster for our cell phone internet:(. The people are amazingly friendly and very helpful.

The one thing we find a little odd about this area is, lol yesterday it was 85 F and tonight it is going down to 32 F. The wind through the night last night shook the trailer it was so strong. So be prepared if you come for summer and winter within the same few day :).
